My Journey...

There is an old saying by a wise scholar that says, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step”.

Everything we do in life begins with a single step. As a young child, I knew two things for certain- I love the outdoors and I love to create. My passion for art began in a small Midwest town where I would spend a great deal of time learning to draw from my favorite book: Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals. Drawing was so easy. I could draw animals using simple shapes and it was so much fun. I could use the animals to tell a story; it could take me to places I have never been. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life- I wanted to be an artist. That made me happy.

It was not until high school and later college, that art truly held a special meaning. My first art class was in a small town high school. It was there my love for Art grew. For the first time, I made paper. I painted on a canvas. I learned how to mix color. Most importantly, I heard the stories of others like me who found that creating art provided a satisfaction that cannot be expressed with words.

Life happens. Over the years, my passion for art became a faded memory. My life simply took a different and exciting path. After many years, I decided that I needed to revive that passion that existed as a young child. I needed to return to the simple things in life that created happiness; the outdoors and Art. The journey that started with a single step, evolved into something unexpected. The, Journey of a Painter, combines two passions of mine. The journey is one that is metaphorical and inspirational. They are travels that have taken me to the places I have always dreamed of going- the Smoky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, waterfalls, and everything I find beautiful. It is a journey to discovery.

The Old Barn

I absolutely love old barns. I love the history and find them incredibly beautiful. On a recent visit to my mom and dads house, I asked my dad if he had a picture of the old barn. He provided me with three. I love them; especially the one that shows the inside of the barn.. I find that photo simply fascinating; an old worn out barn challenged and struggled; barely standing with only a few nails holding it together. All of this in the midst of spring; trees blossoming. The longer I look at this old barn, the more I wonder what stories it has to tell.

This photo was taken on a recent hike to Matthiessen State Park. I enjoyed the short hike to the waterfall. I was particularly drawn to the water that day. Although this isn't anything unusual; I have always been drawn to waterfalls, especially the sound, the movement of water rushing, the changing colors, and its impact on the environment. This time it was different. I was attracted to the stillness. I noticed something that immediately caught my eye and I scrambled to catch the moment with my cell phone.
I love this picture. It captures simplicity; the "it is what it is... and the beauty lies in truth. This is the type of rare moment when you see a celebrity without make-up; natural beauty. You won't find many photographs like this on a calendar or on someone's desktop.

I love so many things  about this picture; the dead tree resting over the top of the rocks; the roots that remind me of a bad hair day.I love the water and how it mildly distorts the rocks beneath; The stillness of the water; the reflections that seem too perfect.

All of this has inspired a new series that captures a slice of reality; the beauty of a bad hair day and naked face...The type of reality that is real and rare, yet special.

Jim and I actually planned a trip to Gatlinburg, TN to hike the Appalachian Trail. We planned the trip to see how the trail was laid out, what shelters were available, and talk to some hikers along the way for advice. When we reached Gatlinburg, we made a short stop to the Visitors Center. I saw a map on the desk and quickly noticed a list of the waterfall trails. I read about Ramsey- a four mile rugged hike just to see it. Jim and I are in good shape (at least I thought!). We quickly made a scheduling adjustment. I was so excited- my first journey to see the second largest waterfall in TN!

The next morning we headed out. We packed our water, granola bars, and apples. I would have packed more...but how long could a four mile hike be???

The weather was perfect! We started the trail. I had my music and Jim had his camera. I kept hearing the water close by. We were on the trail (seemed like a 2.5 hours). We were getting tired and hot and we finally came across this sign..

And had 2.5 miles to go..we weren't even halfway there....

This journey took us across wooden bridges, creeks, and gorgeous landscape, I decide right then and there I was going to paint a series devoted to this trail. I just completed the final painting...Ramsey.

It started raining on the way back.  Jim took a picture of the raindrops. I love this picture and will be working on a raindrop painting in the near future.
